I am deeply grateful to all those who have taken the time to explore the many ways in which our Catholic institutions and organizations are unique. These discussions and personal reflections play an important role in defining, protecting, promoting and preserving a strong sense of Catholic identity.
Portions of this document may have affirmed the actions and attitudes already employed in our service to God and to other people. Other sections may have brought a new level of understanding or a challenge to change. As we continue to reflect on our Catholic identity, we must never forget that God's love is the foundation of all that we are and all that we do. Our missions, our ministries, our outreach to other people are a response to God's love.
The Catholic Church has a 2,000 year tradition of service to the local community and to the world. For over 152 years, the Diocese of Buffalo has been blessed with clergy, religious and lay people who have answered God's call and built an extraordinary network of institutions and organizations that minister to God's people. Parishes, schools, colleges, universities, religious education programs, hospitals, nursing homes, behavioral and mental health services, home care programs, social service agencies and other Catholic organizations provide the opportunity to celebrate God's love and to carry forward our divinely inspired mission.
As we move into the next millennium, our strong Catholic identity will open the way for greater collaboration among Catholic organizations and institutions. Our common bond will strengthen us and ensure that God's people will be served.
May God, who has begun this good work in us, give us the wisdom and the courage to continue this tradition of Catholic service now and in the years to come.
