The Institutional Reality of Human Life
You form a building which rises on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, with
Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. (Ephesians 2:20)
The human person joins together with others to form institutions and organizations that serve humankind. Catholic organizations and institutions are incorporated into the structural unity of the Roman Catholic Church. We are united with the local bishop and the Bishop of Rome. Catholic organizations are illumined by the traditions of the Church, which have been passed on through Church teachings.
Catholic institutions have a long history of establishing lasting structures to further our mission and to provide enduring service. The Catholic Church enhances nations throughout the world with parishes, schools, hospitals, charitable agencies, societies and other groups. Communities receive the inestimable gift of the work that is performed by these institutions. The Catholic Church is committed to continuing and expanding these services where needed.
How Do Catholic Organizations Recognize the Institutional Reality of Human Life?
Ask yourself...
For Institutional Reflection
- How does our organization bring to the attention of our staff, clients, students, patients, benefactors, members and volunteers the rich legacy we received from our past participation in the Catholic Church?
- In what ways does our organization work in a spirit of solidarity with the universal Catholic Church?
- How do we uphold our unity with the Bishop of Rome and the traditions of the Catholic Church as they have been passed on through her teachings?
- What direct connections exist between our institution and the local bishop?
- Do our buildings and grounds appropriately reflect our mission and our purpose? Are Catholic symbols, spiritual art and other religious objects evident in public and private areas?
- Are the structures and resources used in the spirit of responsible stewardship?
- Do our advertising, promotion, fundraising, printed materials, stationery, applications, forms and correspondence reflect our Catholic identity and mission?
For Personal Reflection
- Am I appreciative of the heritage passed on by the Catholic Church? In what ways do I share those traditions?
- Do I know and understand the teachings of the Catholic Church? Where can I obtain further knowledge?
- How do I personally live out and share the teachings of the Catholic Church?
