USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People
The Honorable Joseph P. McCarthy was an Erie County Court judge for over 25 years. Most recently, he has served as acting justice of the Supreme Court and supervising judge of the criminal courts for the eight counties of Western New York. In 2002, the Erie County Bar Association honored Judge McCarthy with its Outstanding Jurist Award and in 1995 the University at Buffalo Law Alumni Association gave him their Distinguished Alumni Award. Prior to his work on the bench, Judge McCarthy served as first assistant district attorney in Erie County. He has been involved in a number of community activities, including the Erie County Anti-Rape Task Force, the Governor's Forensic DNA Analysis Panel and the Canisius College board of governors. He has also served on the faculty of the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School and has frequently lectured on criminal law before other judges, lawyers and police officers. Judge McCarthy was one of ten judges selected from across New York State to redraft and publish the legal instructions given to jurors in criminal trials. He and his wife, Susan Crato McCarthy, are the parents of three sons.
The Honorable Charles F. Graney was the first Family Court judge elected in the history of Genesee County, New York. He retired in June 2002 after 28 years of handling child and family-related issues. In 2001, Judge Graney received the Lila McNall Award for his work in Family Court on behalf of children, and a Special Award from the Committee on Children and the Law of the New York State Bar Association for Outstanding Achievement in Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare. After his retirement, he continued to serve on the Law Guardian Advisory Committee for the Fourth Judicial Department, covering all of Western New York. Before his election to the Family Court bench, Judge Graney served as the first public defender in Genesee County and then as a City Court judge. He and his wife, Mary Anne, are the parents of five children.
Diane Greenaway, CSW-R, has over 30 years of social work experience in Western New York and Southern Ontario. She is currently the staff development coordinator of Metropolitan/District Services Department for Catholic Charities of Buffalo and since 1969 has served in a variety of social work roles for Catholic Charities, from social worker to supervisor to program coordinator. Ms. Greenaway has extensive experience working with young people and their families, and she has co-written and published an article on adolescent abuse and neglect. Ms. Greenaway received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Toronto and served on the faculty of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Social Work for more than 12 years.
Maureen O. Hurley, Esq., is executive vice-president, legal, communications, human resources and corporate services, of Rich Products Corporation in Buffalo. As chief of staff of Rich's leadership council and a member of the Day Care governing board and branding steering team, she has promoted family-friendly initiatives to help employees achieve work/life balance. She has received a number of awards, including the 1996 "Every Woman Opportunity Award of Excellence," which cited her leading role in the creation of Rich's On-Site Childcare Facility and the 2002 "Athena Award" for her dedication in supporting other women her workplace. Ms. Hurley is a member of the board of directors of the YMCA of Greater Buffalo and the board of trustees of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute. She is past president of the Housing Assistance Center of the Niagara Frontier. She and her husband, John, are the parents of three children.
Geoffrey J. Klass is a partner and executive vice-president of CreditTrends, a financial services company focused on helping consumers rehabilitate their credit worthiness. He was formerly managing director - North America for GE Capital - Auto Financial Services. Mr. Klass is a parishioner of St. Louis Church, where he serves as a member of the finance committee and was active in raising funds to restore the church for its 175th anniversary. He is married to Cheryl Klass, chief operating officer of Mercy Hospital. They have three daughters.
Tom Mazur, Psy. D., is a clinical assistant professor, both of psychiatry and pediatrics, at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. He has specialty training in psychoendocrinology and sexology and works at the Children's Hospital of Buffalo. He is one of very few clinical psychologists in the country with such specialty training who works with pediatric endocrinologists counseling families with children diagnosed with various hormonal conditions, growth disorders and sexual concerns. Dr. Mazur, a licensed psychologist in both New York and Maryland, has been a certified sex educator for years. For the past 10 years, he has directed a program for teens involved in sexually inappropriate behavior. Dr. Mazur is a parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Church in Buffalo where he serves as a Eucharistic Minister.
Patricia W. Collard, RN, is a registered professional nurse who currently volunteers her time at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and Marillac Guild of Sister's Hospital. She served as a nurse in various capacities at Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Ms. Collard has served on the Diocesan Board of Education, Bishop's Council of the Laity, the Mt. St. Joseph Academy board of trustees and the St. Rose of Lima Parish Council. She and her husband, Dr. Timothy Collard, have four children.
Sister Mary McCarrick, OSF, CSW-R, is a member of the Stella Niagara Franciscans who holds a master's degree and postgraduate family therapy training in social work. She has 15 years of social work experience, including providing counsel to many sex-abuse survivors. Sister Mary was executive director of Benedict House, a residence for people with AIDS. She is currently provincial minister of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity of Holy Name Province. She has been a part-time instructor at the Franciscan Institute at St. Bonaventure University and she currently serves on the boards of St. Ann's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, Stella Niagara Education Park and Daemen College.
Roderick Quebral, Esq., is an attorney who serves as principal counsel for the Attorney Grievance Committee - 8th Judicial District. He is a former assistant district attorney in Erie County, including two years in the Comprehensive Assault, Abuse and Rape Unit and two years in the special investigations prosecution unit. He is treasurer of the St. Thomas More Guild, the Catholic lawyers' organization in Western New York. Mr. Quebral has lectured extensively on various ethical issues. He lives with his wife, Barbara and their five children in Kenmore where he is president of the St. Paul's Parish Pastoral Council and was president of St. Paul's School Board. He is a member of the Diocesan Board of Catholic Education.
Rev. W. Jerome Sullivan, JCD, is the Pastor of Saint Mary of the Lake Parish in Hamburg NY and the Coordinator of the Priests' Personnel Board. After ordination to the priesthood on December 20, 1961, Monsignor Sullivan obtained a doctorate in Canon Law from the Lateran University in Rome in 1966 after which he served as Vice Chancellor. He has served as Parochial Vicar at Saint John Fisher Parish, South Dayton NY, Saint Paul Parish, Kenmore NY, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Buffalo NY. He was the Administrator of Assumption and Queen of All Saints Parishes in Lackawanna NY, and Pastor of Saint Mary of Sorrows Parish, Buffalo NY. He also has served as Chairman of the Council of Priests along with several terms as a member of the Priests' Personnel Board.
