Bishop Kmiec's Statement on the 40 Days for Life
The 40 Days for Life Campaign, an ecumenical pro-life effort, will begin this fall under the national direction of David Bereit. Local leaders have asked for diocesan endorsement of this activity. For clarity, I would like to share my response and state the diocesan position so as to avoid any ambiguity.
Our diocesan position is consistent with that of the USCCB; the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops does not endorse outside pro-life organizations. However, that does not mean that we are opposed to them. Indeed, many non-diocesan pro-life activities exist in this area and across the nation and I believe we are all trying to answer God's call to defend life.
I maintain that it is up to each individual to decide whether to participate in this activity or not. The decision making and responsibility of the people lie with the national and local leaders of the 40 Days for Life Campaign as a non-diocesan pro-life activity.
I concur with all pro-life efforts that attempt to reach the ultimate goal of eliminating abortion in order to build a culture of life using peaceful, prayerful and charitable approaches.
Furthermore, I admire all those devoted to protecting human life and encourage all to continue to support pro-life activities, especially uniting with the many events sponsored by our Diocese. Together, through various pro-life efforts, we are all striving to put an end to abortion, especially here in our community.
Thank you to all who have dedicated themselves and their time to the cause of life. I am grateful for your pro-life support in our Diocese of Buffalo. Let us continue, in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to be untiring in all our various attempts to defend life so that the right to life is enjoyed not just for some, but for all; born and unborn.
Sincerely in Christ,
Most Rev. Edward U. Kmiec
Bishop of Buffalo
