Back to Father Baker Main Page FATHER BAKER'S SERVICE YEARS
Grade Levels: Primary grades K-3 Scripture Focus: Philippians 4:13 Proverbs 18:24 Luke 6:38 Ephesians 4:32 NYS Learning Standards: English Language Arts: Standards 1, 3 Performance Indicators: Students will: · define generosity. · state examples of generosity. · state examples of Father Baker’s generosity. · state differences and similarities between Father Baker and another figure.
Motivational Activity: Begin the lesson by displaying a picture of Father Baker and asking the students if they can remember some of the events that occurred in his life where he provided service to others. Explain to the students that you will read a story to them, and they will compare Father Baker to the character in the story.
Instructional Steps: 1. Cut out a large heart from a sheet of red construction paper. Write the word “GENEROSITY” on it. 2. Explain to the students that generosity can be defined as having a big heart, yet asking for nothing in return. Have the students brainstorm examples of generosity. Write their responses on the red heart. 3. Read one of the stories from the suggested literature. After reading the story, complete one of the graphic organizers comparing Father Baker’s generosity to the generosity of the character in the story. (See attached sheets). 4. Students can illustrate and/or write a sentence describing how their lives are, or can be, similar to Father Baker’s life.
Follow-Up Activities: 1. Students illustrate examples of traits that demonstrate generosity and then compile the pictures into a book to be placed in the classroom library. 2. Have the students organize a food drive or some other event that allows them to demonstrate their generosity. 3. The students could donate a good used toy to an organization that benefits those in need.
