Bishop Kmiec has successful back procedure

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec, bishop of Buffalo, had a successful procedure today (Mon., Feb. 18) at Kenmore Mercy Hospital.

Doctors performed a Laminotomy on the bishop’s back. The procedure was designed to relieve pressure on his spinal cord due to spinal stenosis, a gradual narrowing of the spinal column causing the nerve roots to be squeezed, placing pressure on his lower back.

The bishop has been suffering from spinal stenosis for several years, and the condition has been getting progressively worse, making it painful for him to stand for long periods of time.

It will take about 2 weeks for the bishop to recover.  He is expected to resume is regular schedule in early March.
