John Hello! My name is John. I graduated from college at a small liberal arts college in South Jersey called Richard Stockton College with a degree in political science in May, 2006. Like many college graduates I started a job search not to long after I graduated. I was hoping to find something to do for a while before I would return to my education at either a graduate or law school. I went on interview after interview, only to find that I was disgusted with what was out there. One night I logged onto my computer, and started looking at all the job search websites I was enrolled in. Finally, on one of these sites I happened upon the brief advertisement for the Diocesan Service Corps and sent in my resume. Now that I am actually in Buffalo (a place I never thought I would ever end up ever..) I am working at Neighborhood Legal Services. Of the many programs here, I work on the Nutrition Education and Outreach Program. My role is generally focused on aiding lower income families to receive food stamps, and shifting the opinion of the general public in Buffalo to accept the food stamp program as a valuable facet of life here in Erie County by both feeding the hungry and the local economy. As a once outsider, and new member of the Buffalo community, I can say with some certainty that this place has a way of drawing you in. I am not sure if it’s the program, the people I live with, or the entire community here, but even when I leave, such as I do for trainings, I find myself missing it. So, if you find yourself in an endless search for a purpose after college or just don't know in what direction you wish to take your life, give the DSC a chance. It gives you time to put your own life into perspective in regards to the world surrounding you. |
