Archbishop Martin John Spaulding convenes the Second Plenary Council in October 1866. The topic addressed is the evangelization of freed slaves.

 
 
 
Young John Slattery is appointed provincial of the Mill Hill Missions in 1878.
 
 

Daniel Rudd organizes the first Black Catholic Congress from 1889-1893.

The Josephites become an independent society separate from Mill Hills in England in 1893. John Slattary becomes the first superior general.
 
John Dorsey is second ordained black Josephite priest in 1902.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The first Mill Hill Missionaries arrive from England at the request of Cardinal Spaulding in 1871.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Augustus Tolton becomes the first recognized black priest in America in 1886.
 
Charles Uncles becomes the first black priest ordained in America in 1891. He is Josephite priest.
 
 
 
 
 
 

John Plantvigne is ordained the third black Josephite priest in 1908.
