Title: Clinical Pastoral Education: Levels One, Two and Supervisory
Training
The Catholic Health System provides Clinical Pastoral Education in a
variety of settings. CPE is theological and professional education for
ministry. Open to theological students, clergy, laypersons and members of
religious orders, the program offers opportunities to grow in areas of
pastoral reflection, pastoral formation and pastoral competence.
A unit of CPE consists of at least 400 hours of supervised training.
Sixty to seventy percent of that time is spent in direct ministry to
people. Thirty to forty percent of the time is spent in group interaction
through verbatim seminars, theoretical presentations and interpersonal
relationship groups. Included also is individual supervision with a
certified supervisor or a supervisor-in-training. The focus is reflection
on ministry. This methodology provides the process that "forms and
informs" interns as they move towards becoming chaplains and
pastoral ministers.
Sisters Hospital offers two different programs: a health-care-based
program that operates out of Sisters Hospital and an inner-city based
program. The learning process is the same for both programs. In the
health-care program the settings for ministry are hospitals, nursing
homes, the homes of patients and Benedict House. The ministry settings
for the community based program are soup kitchens, refugee re-settlement
programs, prisons, rehab houses for persons who have been imprisoned or
addicted and other community-based places of service.
