Diocesan Virtual Youth Con 2022

Event Start Date:
March 5, 2022
Event End Date:
March 5, 2022
Event Venue:
St. Joseph Cathedral

The Virtual Diocesan Youth Conference is returning this year with the theme “Through Him, With Him, In Him.” National speaker and musician Steve Angrisano will serve as keynote speaker for the evening program.

The Conference will begin at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral where organizers will open a time capsule created at the 50th Diocesan Youth Convention held in 2002. So, arrive early to witness this historic moment. Mass with Bishop Michael W. Fisher will follow. All are welcome to join at the cathedral for Mass.

The evening program is from 7-8:30 p.m., Zoom-casted from Immaculate Conception. Youth groups may gather at their parishes to participate as a group or individually from their own homes. One online breakout room will be included.

The conference is held to respond to the needs of high school-aged young people, empower them, help them grow in their faith and encourage their participation in our Church. Jesus commissioned all of us to, “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). This event is a response to Jesus’ commission.

The theme, “Through Him, With Him, In Him,” was the result of two virtual planning meetings with youth and adults. “As we thought about rebuilding our lives, ministries and our diocese, the young people decided to focus on our source of strength – the Eucharist,” said York. “We referenced the United States Bishop’s document “The Mystery of the Eucharist in the Life of the Church” during our planning meetings.” A pdf of the document can be found here:  https://www.usccb.org/resources/mystery-eucharist-life-church. More information and log-in links may be found at www.icyouthea.org. If you have questions, you may contact Denise York at youth@icchurchea.org or 716-652-6400.

White Mass

February 13, 2022
Event End Date:
February 13, 2022
Event Venue:
St. Joseph Cathedral
Bishop Fisher and the Catholic Medical Association invite you to celebrate the Annual White Mass to thank, honor and support in prayer our medical workers. The Mass will begin at 10:30 AM at Saint Joseph Cathedral on Sunday, February 13, 2022.

White Masses (so named for the white coats of physicians) were traditionally celebrated on the Feast of Saint Luke (the patron Saint of physicians) in hospitals, chapels, parish churches, cathedrals, and everywhere that physicians routinely gathered with their chaplains. The White Mass honors all those who work in health care—from nurses and physicians to dietary staff and lab workers.

Since this is also close to the World Day of the Sick (February 11, Our Lady of Lourdes), priests will be available after Mass to offer the Anointing of the Sick. For more information, please call the Cathedral at (716) 854-5855 or email cathedral@buffalodiocese.org.

St. Ignatius of Loyola – Then and Today: Ignatian Spirituality

Event Start Date:
February 24, 2022
Event End Date:
February 24, 2022
Event Venue:
Blessed Sacrament Church

Church on Fire Series at Blessed Sacrament Church from 7 PM to 8 PM

St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) lived at a time at least as tumultuous as our own, especially in the Church. Well before he founded the Society of Jesus, he developed his classic Spiritual Exercises, based on his own conversion and experiences with prayer. In these Exercises, he distilled methods of prayer and a way of looking at life and the world, which we commonly refer to as Ignatian Spirituality.

Fr. Thomas Slon will explain what is unique about Ignatian Spirituality and why it might be especially helpful to us in our time, as we face our own Church crises. The evening will offer opportunities to experience these methods of prayer and to engage in conversation.

Fr. Slon is a priest of the Society of Jesus and has served as the rector of the Jesuit Community of Buffalo since July 2016. A native of Buffalo, he studied mathematics at Cornell University, theology at the Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, MA (now the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College), and architecture at The Catholic University of America.

Before moving to Buffalo in 2016, Fr. Slon served for eight years as the Socius to the Provincial – a position similar to that of chief of staff – in the Province’s central office in New York City.
