Purpose and Description of Position: To evangelize the SUNY at Buffalo (UB) South Campus and Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (JSMBS) through our parish-based Catholic Campus Ministry outreach utilizing a dynamically engaging and creative “missionary spirit.”

The Campus Minister serves as part of the St. Joseph University Parish staff and works in conjunction with the Pastor of the Campus Ministry Family in offering an energetic and welcoming pastoral outreach and accompaniment to collegians, particularly the graduate students who make up the majority of the South Campus and JSMBS population. The Campus Minister accomplishes this ministry by serving the University community’s spiritual needs through offering pastoral care and assisting with the student Liturgy as well as developing and animating effective programming, fellowship opportunities, retreats, service, and immersion experiences.

The Campus Minister works in conjunction with the UB Newman Center at the SUNY at Buffalo North Campus – together providing for the Sacramental, pastoral, and spiritual care to the 30,000 UB students and the larger University at Buffalo community under the ministerial banner of “UB Catholic.” Both St. Joseph University Parish and the UB Newman Center are part of the Diocese of Buffalo’s Campus Ministry Family and share joint leadership. St. Joseph University Parish, a vibrant faith community with a post-Vatican II vision of Church, is located in Buffalo, NY.

Duties and Responsibilities: In order of importance.

1. Student Engagement / Outreach Programming – X
(i.e., Medical Ethics Conversation, Interprofessional Healthcare Ethics Conversation; Nursing School Agape Latte; Dental School Agape Latte, Lunch & Learn, Exam Week Care Packages, Gross Anatomy Exam Care Packages, Blessing of the Brains, Second Year Med Student Blessing of the Brains and dinner, Winter Coat Collection and Distribution, etc.)
2. Pastoral Care / Accompaniment for university students – X
– Encounter, engage, and accompany students by offering presence, non-judgmental listening, and spiritual and pastoral outreach. (For liability purposes, Spiritual Direction is not offered by staff)
3. Student Liturgy – X
– Coordinate and administer 7 PM Sunday Student Mass
– Coordinate student ministers including training for Student Mass
– Collaborate with music ministry for Student Mass
– Coordinate and execute Ash Wednesday services (on campus)
– Coordinate the Mass of the Holy Spirit
4. Communication – X
– Prepare weekly Constant Contact newsletter
– Social Media & website content developer
– Advertising and Promotion
5. Student Fellowship – X
– Coordinate Volunteers for Sunday Evening Meal
– Coordinate Sunday Evening Meals after Mass
6. Administrative
– Budget preparation and maintenance
– Maintain student database
– Share Parish responsibilities with Parish staff
– Actively participate in Staff and Campus Ministry team meetings
7. Service Projects / Immersion trips
– Identify, recruit and direct outreach opportunities for students and provide appropriate Theological reflection for a transformative experience
– Direct students to Parish Social Justice Outreach
8. Retreats
– Coordinate with Newman Center and/or Diocesan Campus Ministry Family
9. Faith Formation
– Direct students to Parish OCIA and Adult Confirmation programs
10. Liaison – X
– Collaborate with North Campus UB Newman Center
– Monthly participation in UB Campus Ministry Association
– Communicate with UB Community Relations Office
– Participate with Diocese of Buffalo Campus Ministry
11. Fundraising
– Aid with Parish’s Campus Ministry fundraising event(s)
12. Collaborate with various Parish Initiatives and Outreach Duties

Qualifications:
• Practicing Roman Catholic with an understanding and commitment to the Roman Catholic Church and its teachings.
• Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Religious Studies, or related field; Master’s Degree in Pastoral Studies/Ministry, Theology, or Divinity is preferred.
• At least two years of professional ministry experience accompanying college students or young adults. Working knowledge of their psychological, pastoral, and spiritual needs is necessary.
• Competency in Theological reflection, prayer, group facilitation, and Roman Catholic Church ritual.
• Great communication skills and proficiency in use of social media and online presence as well as possess excellent organizational and project management skills.
• Energetic and self-motivated individual who can work independently and collaboratively as a part of a team.
• Ability to work flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
• A valid New York State Driver’s License is required. License must meet insurance company rules and regulations for driving underwriting criteria.
• Adherence to and promotion of the Diocese of Buffalo’s Policy and Procedures for the Protection of Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults
• Evidence of a passion and desire to minister to and with young adults.
• Commitment to outreach to those on the margins, especially students.
• Creativity, flexibility, and a good sense of humor are essential.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary Range: $40,000 – $50,000
Benefits package includes health care and pension.
