Job Description:

The Director of Faith Formation/Catechesis is responsible for promoting, cultivating, and fostering the catechetical and pastoral/professional formation of catechists and parish catechetical leaders throughout the Diocese of Buffalo. This position also serves as a resource and support to parishes with family and youth faith formation, adult faith formation, and sacramental preparation.


Work alongside diocesan and parish leadership to:

  • Assess current and emerging parish needs for faith formation leaders, teams, and catechists
  • Design and implement continuing education and formation opportunities for catechists and parish catechetical leaders
  • Provide innovative and intentional support of the Renewal initiative and Families of Parishes model
  • Establish networks of faith formation leaders for mutual support and enrichment
  • Provide resources, orientation, and mentoring options for new catechetical leaders
  • Manage online resources, website updates and digital resources for faith formation
  • Continue to stay up to date with trends and national developments in diocesan level ministry
  • Develop a long-range plan and vision for faith formation in the Diocese (particularly within a Families of Parishes structure) through consultation with the Bishop, clergy, and lay catechetical leaders.
  • Foster the goals and objectives of the USCCB documents (General Directory for Catechesis) relative to faith formation.

Education, Experience and Qualities:

  • Fully initiated Catholic in good standing
  • M.A. or equivalent in Theology, Pastoral Ministry, Religious Education or related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience or direct involvement in formation-related ministry
  • Knowledge and understanding of Forming Disciples curriculum and its framework, including models of faith formation and strategies for implementation of the curriculum in parishes
  • Significant experience in parish or diocesan ministry; strong knowledge of the workings of both
  • Excellent relational, written, and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Strong pastoral, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Experience leading trainings, and offering presentations on catechetical and ministerial topics.
