Job description: The Director of Music is responsible for and maintains careful organization, technical preparation, and prayerful execution of all liturgical music at the St. Joseph Cathedral, for both the parish and Diocesan-related liturgies and functions. The director, in keeping with the Church’s guiding principles, will promote the full, conscious, and active participation of the faithful in liturgical celebrations.

The director is to maintain a high standard of quality and prayerful effectiveness of sacred music in service to the liturgy for the glorification of God and the sanctification of the faithful. Through collaborative and open communication, the Director and Rector share a unified vision in the liturgical life of the parish to express in our lives and to manifest to others the mystery of Christ and the real nature of the true Church.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Promotes an authentic liturgical music formation and celebrations at the Cathedral
• Recruits and Directs the Cathedral Choir
• Coordinates the Cathedral Choir with regard to rehearsals, schedules and auditions
• Prepares and rehearses cantors for the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy
• Serves as the principal organist for Cathedral and Diocesan celebrations of the Sacred Liturgy
• Oversees the maintenance of the areas used by the choir and instruments, especially the organ and piano, working with Cathedral staff and outside vendors
• Coordinates the hiring and reimbursement of other musicians as needed for Cathedral and Diocesan celebrations
• Oversees office work associated with the Cathedral Liturgical Program (production of worship aids, management of music libraries, etc.)
• Plans and reviews the liturgical repertory for Cathedral and Diocesan celebrations of the Sacred Liturgy with the Rector of the Cathedral/Director of the Office of Worship on at least a quarterly basis
• Coordinates liturgical music for the planning of Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals and other sacramental celebrations at the Cathedral as needed
• Participates in periodic review with the Rector of the Cathedral
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Master’s Degree in music or equivalent professional experience
• Proficient organ performance and excellent directing skills
• Excellent skills in administration, communication, collaboration, organization and supervision
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Pastoral experience in the Sacred Liturgy and Liturgical Music
• Availability to carryout responsibilities in the evenings and on weekends.
• Membership in professional organizations

Salary: $40,000 – $48,000 depending on experience
