Diocese releases new list of priests

On Nov. 5, 2018, the Diocese of Buffalo released another list of priests with substantiated claims of sexual abuse of a minor. This is in addition to the original list published in March 2018. Priests who received a single allegation after their death are not included. Death dates for diocesan priests are in parenthesis.

The '60 Minutes' story that aired on Sunday clearly indicated that the Diocese of Buffalo is allowing 8 or 9 priests to remain in active ministry despite having credible child sexual abuse allegations against them.

Two stories aired on Sunday, Oct. 28, regarding the Diocese. Many have sought our comment about both. Therefore, we issue this statement and will provide information in the days ahead that will add perspective to the stories. For now, we simply observe that the material reported in the stories was incomplete, out of context and in some cases plainly inaccurate.

The bishop is pleased to announce the appointment of Steven L. Halter as director of professional responsibility for the diocese. Halter, who previously served as a special agent in the Buffalo office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, will begin his new position on Monday, Oct. 1.

Diocese announces Compensation Program for victims of sexual abuse

Bishop Richard J. Malone has announced the establishment of a voluntary Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program (IRCP) for those who have made claims that they were sexually abused as a child by a member of the clergy in the Diocese of Buffalo. Individuals who have previously made claims will be contacted and invited to participate in this voluntary program offering monetary settlements.
